It’s Sea Turtle Nesting Season in Playa del Carmen!
Hey there! Exciting news from Playa del Carmen beaches! In just six days, we’ve spotted four sea turtle nests! Lucelly Ramos Montejo, Director of Environmental Management and Climate Change at Solidaridad, shared that monitoring began at the end of April, and by early May, we’re already seeing some action.
We’re so lucky to host four out of the seven sea turtle species found in Mexico, including the green (or white), hawksbill, loggerhead, and leatherback turtles. It’s such a privilege!
To ensure our adorable turtle friends have a safe nesting environment, beachfront hotels are kindly asked to clear away any furniture by 6:00 p.m. to make room for potential nighttime visitors.
We’re working hard to protect these precious nests from any harm or theft. Stealing sea turtle eggs is a serious federal offense, punishable by up to nine years in jail and a hefty fine exceeding 20,000 pesos. Let’s all do our part to keep our beaches safe and welcoming for these amazing creatures!
