Quintana Roo to Build 21 Wildlife Crossings Along the Cancun-Tulum Highway

Exciting news for nature lovers! The state government of Quintana Roo is launching a groundbreaking project to protect local wildlife along the federal 307 highway between Cancún and Tulum. 🐾 This initiative will include 21 wildlife crossings, with 15 elevated overpasses, 2 ziplines, and 4 underground passages. The goal? To help endangered species safely navigate their habitats while coexisting with modern infrastructure.

In collaboration with organizations like the Secretariat of Ecology and Environment (Sema) and the Institute of Biodiversity and Protected Natural Areas (Ibanqroo), this project is set to kick off later this year. Since March 2023, technical studies have been conducted to identify the best ways to protect species like jaguars, spider monkeys, ocelots, and even sea turtles in critical areas such as Xcacel-Xcacelito, the Yum Balam Biological Corridor, and Sian Ka’an.

Funding for a Greener Future
An initial budget of 15 million pesos has been set aside for the first phase of this project, thanks to a special biodiversity trust fund managed by Sefiplan. This fund ensures resources are available to make Quintana Roo’s highways more eco-friendly while prioritizing the protection of its incredible biodiversity.

Why It Matters
This project is a game-changer, especially in areas of international importance like the RAMSAR wetland site, a haven for sea turtles, and a vital mating ground for jaguars. Wildlife sightings in the region include jaguarundis, pumas, striped skunks, and more. By creating safe crossings, the project helps safeguard these amazing creatures and their ecosystems for generations to come.

Let’s celebrate this incredible step towards a greener, more sustainable Quintana Roo! Who’s ready to see these wildlife crossings in action?
