The 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season Arrives to Riviera Maya
June 1st marks the official start of the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season, and with predictions of 17 to 25 named storms, local officials have assured us that they’re prepared.
Preparations began over two months ago, with the selection of potential hurricane shelters starting in the southern region. Now, more than 800 buildings across Quintana Roo are ready to serve as emergency shelters if needed.
State officials have been busy training committee members for the 2024 season to ensure everything runs smoothly.
Each municipality has also formed a dedicated hurricane committee with trained personnel to organize emergency protocols during tropical storms or hurricanes.
According to NOAA, there’s a 70% chance their prediction of 17 to 25 named storms for the 2024 season is accurate. Of those, 8 to 13 could become hurricanes, and 4 to 7 might be major hurricanes.
NOAA also predicts an 85% chance of above-normal hurricane activity this season, partly due to rising temperatures.
Quintana Roo has experienced scorching temperatures between 40°C (104°F) and 45°C (113°F) for the second month in a row, with nighttime temperatures barely dipping below 30°C (86°F). The Weather Channel has issued another excessive heat warning for Playa del Carmen, this time for an entire week.
A severe weather alert has been issued for Playa del Carmen for the week of June 1 by The Weather Channel.
NOAA indicates that La Niña and warmer-than-average ocean temperatures are key factors driving this increased tropical activity. Forecasters at the National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center expect above-normal hurricane activity in the Atlantic basin this year.
NOAA’s outlook for the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season includes an 85% chance of an above-normal season, a 10% chance of a near-normal season, and a 5% chance of a below-normal season.
Interestingly, the weather agency detected an out-of-season system in the Atlantic in late April, which formed 38 days ahead of the official season. As we welcome the hurricane season, the first storm will be named Alberto.
