How Voting Works
Annually, as part of our World’s Best Awards survey, T+L invites readers to share their insights on global travel experiences. Readers have the opportunity to voice their opinions on top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. In 2023, nearly 165,000 T+L readers participated in the survey, marking a nearly 25 percent increase from pre-pandemic voting levels. This substantial turnout resulted in over 685,000 votes cast across more than 8,500 distinct properties, spanning hotels, cities, cruise lines, and more.
Hotels were categorized as resort hotels, city hotels, or safari lodges based on their locations and amenities. They were assessed on the following criteria:
- Rooms/facilities
- Location
- Service
- Food
- Value
For each of these characteristics, respondents could choose a rating ranging from excellent to poor. The final scores were calculated as averages of these responses.
What Readers Loved
Hotels in the Yucatán Peninsula, particularly in Cancún and the Riviera Maya along the Caribbean coast performed exceptionally well, securing eight spots on this year’s list. A notable newcomer is Conrad Tulum Riviera Maya, ranked at No. 17. This trend is evident in this year’s list, with five all-inclusive properties making it to the top resorts in Mexico, as voted by T+L readers. Grand Velas Los Cabos (No. 12) and Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit (No. 10) on the opposite coast were also beloved by readers for their exceptional cuisine and exquisite surroundings.
