The Rich History of Akumal: From Sacred Shore to Sea Turtle Sanctuary
Akumal is now known as a peaceful beach town in the Riviera Maya. But long before tourists arrived, this coastal area had a rich and fascinating past.
A Place of the Mayans
The name Akumal comes from the Mayan language. It means “Place of the Turtles.” For centuries, sea turtles have come to these beaches to lay their eggs. The ancient Maya respected these animals and considered the area a sacred space.
Archaeological sites around Akumal suggest that the Maya used the region as a coastal trading post. Goods like salt, obsidian, and textiles moved through these shores. Even today, you can explore nearby ruins like Tulum and Coba to understand how important this coast once was.

A Vision in the 1950s
Modern Akumal began to take shape in the late 1950s. A Mexican businessman and diver named Pablo Bush Romero discovered the area’s beauty during a diving expedition. He was amazed by the crystal-clear waters and vibrant coral reefs. Soon after, he founded Akumal as a diving community.
Romero built the first homes, roads, and services. He invited marine biologists, conservationists, and fellow divers to join the project. Slowly, Akumal grew into a peaceful retreat for ocean lovers.
Marine Life and Environmental Efforts
Because of its clear waters and coral reefs, Akumal became one of the first places in Mexico to attract diving tourism. The area is part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second-largest coral reef in the world.
However, rapid tourism brought environmental challenges. In recent years, local groups have worked hard to protect the turtles and reefs. Regulations now limit how many visitors can swim with turtles, helping to reduce stress on marine life.
A Balance of Nature and Culture
Today, Akumal blends its rich Mayan roots with eco-conscious tourism. You’ll find small hotels, beachfront villas, and eco-parks. Travelers come here to relax, snorkel, and connect with nature.
Despite its growth, Akumal remains one of the Riviera Maya’s most charming and historic destinations. If you want to experience a place with deep roots and natural beauty, Akumal should be on your list.
